Places of interest: Cathedral: paintings by El Greco, Juan de Borgoña, Rubens, Bassano and Goya. Santa Cruz Museum: this is currently the citys main museum. Alcázar: Muslim fortress, completely renovated by Emperor Charles V to accommodate the royal seat Hospital Tavera: home to a museum with works by great masters including most notably the Baptism of Christ by El Greco. Puerta de Bisagra: triumphal arch dedicated to Emperor Charles of Habsburg, Cristo de la Luz Mosque, Museum/House of El Greco (a broad range of works by the Cretan painter), El Tránsito Synagogue (14th century) and Santa María la Blanca Synagogue (13th century). Round the corner: Even if you do not have a car, you can take a quiet walk along the ring road, from the bridge of San Martín, and admire the classic view of the city built on the river Tajo. The route ends at the medieval bridge of Alcántara, where the remains of Roman aqueduct and the castle of San Servando may be seen. The river basin is site of the remarkable neo-Mudejar style Railway Station, which dates from the beginning of the 20th century. |
