information
Tortosa is a city dating back some two thousand years with a vast architectural, artistic and cultural heritage. Located on the Ebro River, it is the capital of the Baix Ebre area, and its most important commercial city. It has important examples of Medieval, Gothic, Baroque and Modernist architecture, including the Zuda castle, the cathedral, the Episcopal Palace, the market, the Convent of Santa Clara, Reales Colegios, the Modernist market and the Jewish quarter. From Tortosa there are many beautiful places you can visit on short excursions. Some of the most lovely include the National Park of the Ebro Delta (worthy of several days of exploring), the mountainous area of Puertos de Tortosa-Beseit, where there is an important reserve of Hispanic goats, the Benifallet caves, the Miravet castle and the villages of Pinell de Brai and Horta de Sant Joan. It is also the perfect place for avid hikers, sightseeing cylists, and people who like to practice adventure sports such as kayaking, climbing and abseiling. One place, known as the 'Vía Verde', literally, the 'Green Road', runs along an old railway track no longer in service which has been restored for leisure activities. It is between Arnes and Xerta, and passes by the old stations of Horta de Sant Joan, Bot, Prat de Compte and Pinell de Brai. |
