information Monte Naranco (2.5 km) This mountain range has the remains of many Roman establishments and also features the popular Santa Maria of the Naranco palace, which, in the 9th century, was the hunting pavillion of King Ramiro I. The Cathedral of Oviedo (1 km) This cathedral dates back to the 14th century and was erected in 1388 over the previous cathedral, which was founded in the 8th century. The Renaissance altarpiece is one of the most impressive examples in Spain. The cathedral also contains the sacred relics of the kingdom of Asturias. The cathedral is an obligatory step for pilgrims travelling towards Santiago de Compostela. Historic part of Oviedo (0.6 km) All of the narrow ancient streets are well preserved and the lack of cars provokes the sensation of having stepped back in time. Every morning there is a market in El Fontán. Also well worth a visit is the Campoamor Theatre, where the Prince of Asturias Awards is held every year. |
