Area
information
Tarifa is one of the oldest towns in occident. Its location between two seas and two continents has made it the place of human settlements since the paleolythic age. Particularly visible is the trace of arabs and romans in our architecture, urbanism, traditions and gastronomy. The many and valuable prehistoric deposits, among them the Necrópolis de los Algarbes and shelters decorated with cave paintings, shows the historical wealth of the town. Baelo Claudia give testimony of its importance in the Mediterranean trade routes, thanks to our Garum, a sauce very appreciated in the Imperial Rome The most visited monuments date back from the Middle Ages: the Castillo de Guzmán and the fortified area, and also the arabic layout of our streets. Recently, the Junta de Andalucía (regional government) has recognized the exceptional value of our legacy honouring the old town with the distinction of Conjunto Histórico. But Tarifa is not only its cultural heritage. We also are also proud of our natural and biological treasures. There are two Natural Parks in the locality: the Parque de los Alcornocales, and the Parque Litoral del Estrecho. This last one recognizes and protects the landscaping values of the coastal zone but specially the wealth and conservation of the marine bottoms that turn the Straits a spectacular spot for diving. Diving, sighting of cetaceans and migratory birds, windsurf, kitesurf... the geographic, natural and climatologic characteristics of the Straits provide superb conditions for the practice of aquatic sports and activities in the nature Tarifa is well-known as a place were windsurf and kitesurf fans from all Europe come to enjoy powerful winds and very long beaches. For all those reasons, the town has become a highly appreciated tourist destination where all kind of visitors, from those fond of our way of living, culture and gastronomy, to those who simply wants to relax in some spot of our edless beaches. | |
