Between Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas is a nature reserve with a surface area of 400 hectares of golden sand dunes that can only be crossed on foot or by camel. To the west of the nature reserve is the Oasis, where many species of migratory birds make a stop on their way to Africa. Near the Oasis is the Lighthouse of Maspalomas, which was built in 1886. The lighthouse is 65 metres high and overlooks the surrounding area.
