Area
information
There are activities to suit everyone in and around Denia, including golf, sailing, scuba diving, kite boarding and windsurfing, jet skiing, mountain biking, horse riding and climbing. Many people come however just to enjoy the 20 kilometres of beautiful beaches! Denia is steeped in history going back to Grecian times and beyond. The castle was built by the Moors during their 700 year occupation of the area and is built on the site of Roman ruins. The annual celebration of "Moors & Christians" re-enacts the driving out of the Moors by the Christians in 1492 and takes place in the first two weeks of August every year. There are many other fiestas and celebrations in Denia all of which involve copious quantities of music, processions and fire-works. They are fascinating both to see and to take part in. In March the "Fallas" (burning of effigies to symbolise the start of Spring), in April the Easter parades, in July "Bous del mar" (Bulls in the sea), in August "Moors and Christians", to name but a few. There are also many outdoor concerts and festivals such as the annual International Dance Festival which lasts for a week and takes place under the moonlight in the amphitheatre by the castle walls. Denia is also well placed for short visits to Ibiza and the Balearic Islands. The Teramitaca and Tera Natura theme parks are only a short drive away as are many other attractions such as the Aqualandia waterpark, and the Mundomar sealife park. There is also a nature reserve just outside Denia as well as a Safari park. Short boat trips can be made from Denia to many other resorts along the coast. |
